I had a problem running the software on one of my computers because their program wouldn't support a sound driver. In addition, if you have any technical problems with the software, Kaplan tech support is utterly useless. The interface of the software is nothing like the actual exam.
I can't believe that a global company like Kaplan can get away with publishing garbage like this. You may find yourself going over their solutions for hours trying to understand it only to eventually realize that the methodologies and reasoning in the book is just plain wrong. The test prep software CD is an archaic piece of junk. Do not use this book if you actually want to score in 90th percentile or above. This book, along with the Kaplan GMAT book is terrible.
It looks like this program was written in 1950 by people who have never actually seen a real CAT exam. Keep in mind that there is absolutely no need for sound in the program, but tech support couldn't figure it out and eventually just told me that it was my fault.I could go on with a long list of complaints about this book, but by now you should understand not to buy this book. It just goes to show you that they are more concerned with selling their name and reputation than providing actual test prep materials to students.
Reasons you should not buy this book, or any other Kaplan product:This book is filled with typos, mistakes, and blatant misrepresentations of facts.
My verbal score didn't turn out so well (I'm an engineer, so go figure), but my math score was a perfect 800. It went through every possible type of math problem you could encounter on the GRE. I definitely recommend this book and all future editions. While I should have began to review for the GRE a little earlier than I did, this book was still really helpful. There is a sort of cribb's notes section in the back for the math section that I went through the night before the exam (not necessarily recommended).
Sometimes it has a lot of explanatory text, which I skipped. It is practical and has useful information. But the practice tests and the examples are very helpful. I only had two weeks to prepare for the test. This is the only reference you need if you have such a short time to study.
No study guide can make it fun. But this book had very good practice exams.Note: This is a VERY BORING test for which to study. But this was a very useful study aid. Results: I scored 1460/1600Verbal 700/800 97th percentileQuant 760/800 86th percentileI was hoping for a 780 or 800 on the Quant portion, but I applied to, and was accepted by, Columbia for an MS in Operations Research so I guess the Quant score was ok. I reviewed for the GRE with this book and with Princeton Review. Some of the techniques in Princeton I liked better than Kaplan, esp the analogies strategy.
